A small research team can acquire a surprising amount of software before it has a reliable way to answer a question. Search happens in one tab, a model summarizes in another, and the final document quietly loses the links that would let someone check it. The useful starting point is the journey from source to claim.

Why it matters: A research stack should make an answer easier to inspect and update. Producing more text is a poor substitute for that.

Keep the evidence close

Imagine a two-person team comparing payment products. This is a hypothetical workflow, but the failure is familiar: one person saves a product announcement while the other copies a price into a spreadsheet. When the price changes, neither record explains which claim needs revision.

A source library gives each document a stable place. Zotero’s documentation describes collections as overlapping sets: a single item can sit in more than one collection without being duplicated. That is a useful model for research spanning several topics. A document about AI fraud detection might belong to both an AI file and a payments file. Zotero: Collections and Tags.

Alongside the source, keep a short note stating what it supports, when it was checked and what remains uncertain. Those fields are an editorial proposal, not features every research product automatically supplies.

Give the model a bounded job

An assistant can help extract differences, propose follow-up questions or compare the wording of two documents. Ask it to return the evidence behind each claim, including an admission when the evidence is missing.

Anthropic’s architecture guidance distinguishes predefined workflows from agents that choose their own steps. It recommends adding complexity when it improves the task. The document dates to December 2024 and now carries a tooling-update note; its architectural distinction is more durable than its product examples. Building effective agents.

For a small desk, a predictable sequence of retrieval, notes and review may be enough. An autonomous research loop earns its place when the question needs branching investigation and the team can still inspect the results.

Check the answer you will actually use

Build a modest reference set of questions the team already understands. Include an outdated source, a contradictory claim and a question with no supported answer. Judge the resulting document for source support and useful omissions, then record the time spent correcting it.

Anthropic’s evaluation guide separates an agent’s account of its work from the outcome in its environment. That distinction applies to research too: a confident summary is not evidence that its citations support it. Demystifying evals for AI agents.

The first useful stack may consist of a source library, a writing tool and one assistant. Add another product when a specific handoff keeps breaking.
